ESCAPES FROM PRISON CAMPS CAUSE CONCERN
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. Concern at the number of escapes from prison camps was expressed by Mr. P. Kearins (Govt., Waimarino), during a discussion of the Justice Department and Prisons Department estimates in the House of Representatives this morning. He appealed for more care in the selection of men for this type of prison. The work they did was of great benefit, mainly in road work. Women felt very uncomfortable at the. number of escapes and it was fortunate that there had been no serious crime as a result of them. Dr. A. M. Finlay (Govt., North Shore) said he regarded the development of prison camps as a healthy sign and hoped the future would see more of this type and less of the Mount Eden sort of prison. He would not like to see a prison camp surrounded by fences. It was good for the prisoners to have self-discipline imposed on them.
