Youth Charged In Court With Cranston Murder
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. Charged with the murder of Mrs. Katherine Gladys Cranston, aged 47, widow, at Wellington on Sunday, Edward Raymond Horton, aged 20, blacksmith’s striker, appeared in the Police Court this morning.
* Accused had been charged in the Police Court on Tuesday with being idle and disorderly, and had been remanded in custody until October 4.
Chief Detective E. H. Compton, who appeared for the police today, asked for a remand on the murder charge until October 4 and this was granted by the magistrate, Mr. A. A. McLachlan. Difficult Time For Police Inspector J. Bruce Young has been in charge of police operations with the assistance of Chief Detective Compton and a large force of detectives and men of the uniform branch. The crime occurred at a particularly difficult moment for the Wellington police. The commissioner had left the city on his way overseas and the superintendent in charge of the district was attending the police inquiry at Napier.
