BRITISH STEAMER BLOWS UP IN BALTIC SEA

(11 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 1. The British steamer Leth blew uo and sank in the . Baltic Sea off the North German coast. The Scheveningen radio, quoting a message from a Finnish steamer which reported the sinking, said the Finnish ship Fanny had taken on board members of the steamers’ crew. According to the Danish Marine Ministry the ship was about 4000 tons. Danish aircraft reported that the crew were picked up by a fishing boat and taken ashore. Forty men landed at Gedser, Southern Denmark from two German fishing boats.

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a mine to the southeast of the Danish island of Zeeland.
