REBEL ATTACK ON LARISSA DRIVEN OFF
ATHENS. Sept. 29. Greek rebels attacked Larissa today. Larissa, with a population of 24,000, is the largest town the rebels have ever attacked. Police and troops at first were taken by surprise, but rallied and drove off the attackers. Among the rebels were 100 mounted men and groups of saboteurs who mined the streets and blew up houses. Ten picked groups of saboteurs, each one a 15-man “suicide team,” struck into the heart of Larissa last night while 500 guerrillas, supported by cavalry, attacked the town from the east and west, says the British United Press correspondent. The attack appears to have been aimed at blowing up the waterworks and other important buildings. It lasted 90 minutes and was the biggest that the guerrillas have launched since the winter revolution in Athens three years ago.
Larissa is an important communications centre and the site of important United States and Greek air bases.
