Cabinet Approves Of Montgomery’s Post
(10 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 30. It is understood that the British Cabinet yesterday formally endorsed the appointment of Field Marshal Lord Montgomery as chairman of the Western Union Defence Council, says Reuter’s political correspondent. The appointment, together with the remainder of the personnel of the new council, will be announced within the next 48 hours. Lord Montgomery’s appointment to the new position will involve his resignation as Chief of the Imperial General Staff. It is believed that the Cabinet is considering among other possible successors, Lieut.-General G. W. Templar, who is at present vice-Chief. It is understood that five Defence Ministers, together with United States and Canadian observers, made good progress in preparing the ground for an extension of the Brussels Pact to an Atlantic defence pact. It is considered in Paris that the United States Government will propose to Congress the formation of an Atlantic defence union soon after the Presidential elections in November. Its realisation would fulfil the demand for a concrete military commitment by America which France, Belgium and Holland have put forward since the Brussels Pact was established.
