DUTCH DEFENCE CONTRIBUTION TO WEST UNION PLAN
(10 a.m.) THE HAGUE, Sept. 30. The first details of the Netherlands preparations for taking part in Western Union defence are disclosed in the 1949 army budget which provides for an expenditure of about £51,000,000 —more than £3,000,000 more than this year’s budget.
The navy budget provides for an expenditure of about £31.000,000 —about £4,000,000 more than in 1948. Plans are being prepared to expand air defence, including measures to deal with surprise landings, although the military obligations resulting from the Brussels five-nation pact and military qo-operation with Belgium have not been fully surveyed. The Netherlands’ contribution to the five-Power defence will include the provision of aircraft and technical equipment, building of air bases and subsequent participation in an international air force. The despatch of troops to overseas territories would be restricted to two infantry brigades and six infantry battalions yearly. If the Indonesian situation develops to Holland’s satisfaction, two divisions will be withdrawn in the coming year. The construction of six new destroyers will begin this year.
