TWO LIFE MEMBERS ELECTED BY N.P.A.

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 30. Mr. C. W. Earle, managing-director and editor of the Dominion, was elected a life member of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association at its annual conference last week. In proposing the election of Mr. Earle to life membership, the president of the association. Mr. R, D. Horton. Auckland, said the association had only four life members, the late Mr. P. Selig, Sir Henry Brett, Sir George Fenwick and Mr. Louis Blundell. Mr. Earle had been the father and inspiration of the association. He had been president since 1921 until last February when he decided to retire. They were all proud of the services rendered to the press of New Zealand by Mr. Earle. His efforts had not been surpassed by any of the newspaper figures of the past. Mr. 11. P. F. Blundell seconded the proposal, which was carried by acclamation. Honour Appreciated Replying, Mr. Earle said he was very honoured by the life membership conferred upon him, especially when his name was associated with the men already mentioned by the president. Speaking of the association, Mr. Earle said it had been formed many years ago and had been of great value to the country. He deeply appreciated the honour conferred upon him. Mr. L. J. Berry, manager of the association, was also elected a life member. Mr. Horton said that Mr. Berry had been associated with the newspaper world since 1899 and was part-time secretary from 1915 until 1921 and then full-time secretary and later manager. He was being proposed as a life member because of the special service he had given the association. Mr. Berry was entering upon a period of sick leave and all hoped he would make a good recovery. Mr. Berry, replying, said he did not feel that his services entitled him to the honoured position of a life member. but it gave him great satisfaction to know that in that way he would retain his interest in the association. He was very pleased to know that Mr. Earle had been elected a life member, an honour which was due to him.
