PUKEKOHE POTATO CROP LIKELY TO BE A RECORD
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Oct. i. Franklin produce growers have begun digging the new season's potato crop which promises to be a record. Since the first 1000 bags were lifted on Monday yields of 4£ and 5 tons to the acre have been common. Merchants with 20 and 30 years’ experience of the Pukekohe district consider that there has been no harvest to equal the return that is expected this year from the 800 acres under cultivation. “The crops are in perfect condition as a result of the mild winter and the past four weeks of sunshine,” said Mr. L. W. Key. secretary of 'he Iranklin Produce Growers’ Association. “The yields now being obtained are remarkable for the last week in September. The crop at the same time in the two preceding seasons amounted to only about 30cwt. to the acre.” One of the largest potato-growing districts in the Dominion, Pukekohe supplies a. market that extends throughout the North Island. The digging of the main Pukekohe crop continues until December. The area in potatoes is approximately the same as last year.
