WATER SHORTAGE IN SOUTHLAND AREAS
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 1. After a period of exceptionally dry weather for this time of the year householders in Southland depending on tanks for water supply are in need of a good fall of rain. Some of these tanks, particularly in the Collingwood and Waikini areas of Invercargill, have been dry for more than two weeks, and residents have been carting water for household requirements. Riverton and other towns in the province wiithout a water scheme are also faced with a shortage. Places now facing water shortage have been in a similar position before but not at this time of the year. The rainfall for August was 1.28 in., compared with an average of 3.25 in.
