ABORIGINES TO BE GIVEN VOTE IN AUST. POLLS
(10 a.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 1. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifiey, announced that the Cabinet had decided to amend the Electoral Act to allow aboriginal Australian natives to vote at the Senate and House of Representatives elections if they are entitled under the State law to be enrolled as electors or have served with the armed forces. Aborigines in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are entitled to enrolment on the State rolls. Western Australian aborigines are mainly disqualified from State enrolment but provision is made for natives to be enrolled for the Commonwealth elections. In Queensland the aborigines are disqualified from enrolment and the proposed Commonwealth legislation would have effect only in respect of members or ex-members of the forces. ? Consideration will be given later to aborigines of the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory,
