Aust. Motor Accidents Cost £10,000,000 Yearly
CANBERRA, Aug. 31. Motor vehicle accidents in Australia represent an economic loss of £10,000,000 a year—according to the Australian Road Safety Council. The cost is made up of damaged property, hospital and medical treatment for the injured, wage losses and the calculated life value of the persons killed.
In the first year of its existence the council claims to have materially reduced the toll of the road. Although motor traffic throughout Australia was much heavier for the year ended June 30 than for the previous year, road accidents showed a marked drop. Motor registrations increased by 9.4 per cent, and petrol consumption by 7.4 per cent., yet road casualties were reduced by 6.2 per cent. The latest statistics show that, on the basis of deaths per 10,000 motor vehicles, the Australian figure was 11.3, the American 9-6 and the New Zealand 4,3.
