MALAYAN OUTLOOK IMPROVING : WAR COSTS £3,000,000

(10.30 a.m.) SINGAPORE, Aug. 29. The Malayan situation is improving, according to service chiefs and civil administrators. Troops available for offensive action were increasing almost daily,, and information against terrorists was improving. , Reviewing the general situation, Major-General Boucher said that odd incidents must continue for some time. Major-General Dunlop said he thought that terrorist activity in Johore might increase next month. The acting Chief Secretary, Mr. H. P. Bryson, said the 'Federation Government intended to use economic and propaganda weapons in addition to force against the terrorists. Thus far 18,000,000 leaflets had been. distributed, including 6,000,000 from the air. Communist-led terrorism has thus far cost the Federation Government about £3,000,000 in measures to combat it since it began last June, according to the acting Chief Secretary, Mr. H. P. Bryson. Ten Siamese were killed when British aircraft from a North Malayan base bombed a village in the Naradhivas district, on the Malayan border. An official report said the bombing lasted one hour.
