CRUISER SENT TO SINGAPORE TO AID BRITISH FORCES

(10 a,m.) SINGAPORE, Aug. 29. The cruiser H.M.S. London will arrive at Singapore this week from Hong Kong to reinforce the naval strength in South-East Asia in view of the situation in Malaya and Burma. This move coincides with intensified precautions to prevent the spread of Communist-inspired terrorism from the Malayan mainland to Singapore Island. As part of the precautions a large force consisting of Singapore police, Gurkhas and Inniskilling Fusiliers today swept Pontian Peninsula, in the louth-west of Johore State near Singapore Island. An army spokesman said there had been frequent reports that terrorists were training in this area. It was announced yesterday that Johore is now under the military command of Singapore. While an Auster spotting plane and Spitfires patrolled overhead police landed on the peninsula from the sea, Gurkhas sealed all outlets and the Inniskillings swept the whole area. The forces did not contact terrorist bands, but several Chinese were arrested.
