PATTON BRILLIANTLY WINS 200 M. FINAL BY INCHES

(N.Z.P.A.— Reuter—Copyright.) (11.45 a.m.) * LONDON, August 3. A sparse crowd sitting under a dull sky that threatened rain saw the start of th* athletic events today at the Olympic Games. The track had recovered well after the soaking it received yesterday, but it was drizzling again this afternoon. Mel. Patton, United States, in a pulsating race, won the men’s 200 metres final, in which six of the world’s best sprinters fought every inch of the way.

Patton’s gallant finish in which he beat H. Ewell by inches brought terrific roars from the crowd.

In the semi-final heat of this event, John Treloar, Australia’s champion, tired over the last 20 yards and finished fourth. He led at the halfway mark. Four runners fought out a punishing finish but Treloar faltered near the finish.

Earlier in the other semi-final. MeKenley defeated Patton by three yards. Austria’s three runners qualified for the 100 metres hurdles semi-finals.
