AIR COMPANIES SHORT OF NAVIGATORS
SYDNEY, June 22.
Lack of certified navigators may cause six Sydney air cnarter companies to discontinue oversea flights. The Department of Civil Aviation has notified all operators that the rule that navigators on all international flights must have first-class tickets is to be enforced. Hitherto companies have depended upon experienced pilots who are also skilful navigators. Licensed navigators have been sought unsuccessfully by the air charter companies, as the limited number available has been, absorbed by the major airlines. One operator said that even former R.A.A.F. navigators needed to study for six months and fly for 200 hours as cadet navigators before qualifying for a first-class certificate. Four companies flying migrants to Australia from Europe report that they have been unable to find navigators and fear they will have to cease operations.
