£3,000,000 PAID FOR DAMAGE BY TROOPS
WASHINGTON, June 20. The War Department has paid out almost £3,000,000 in the settlement of claims for damage done by Americans overseas! The Navy paid about £300,000, New Zealand man injured when a tram stopped abruptly to avoid a collision with an American jeep. All claims, however, were closely scrutinised qnd often refused or scaled down. Thus a British sergeant, who claimed £IOOO on the ground that an American soldier stabbed him, received nothing, because investigation showed he was injured in a brawl over a girl. The native owner of five coconut trees in Tonga received only £1 of the £ls he claimed. The Army and Navy were authorised to settle all claims under £1550. Claims above that amount required a special order from Congress. Claims were accepted only if American soldiers abroad during or after the war were responsible for the damage. Battle claims were not admitted.
