Flower-Bedecked Apia Colourfully Welcomes Viceregal Tourists

(10.15 a.m.) APIA, July 15. With 18 to 22 men at each set of sweeps, four flower-bedecked galleys escorted the vice-regal barge into Apia when Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg arrived at Western Samoa yesterday ill tho course of the Pacific cruise.

Each craft belonged to a Samoan community and they were the modern equivalents of war canoes of the two once rival fleets that fouglit pitched battles at sea with the cannons of Nelson’s Day less than 10 years ago. From inspecting the ex-servicemen's guard of honour and meeting members of the newly created Legislative Assembly on the wharf, Their Excellencies passed through a lane of 4000 children on the way to Government House.

Massed flowers were used to spell out a welcome to the visitors on arches erected along the main street of the town and every public building was flying the New Zealand Ensign side by side with the new blue and red flag of Samoa.

Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg atlended a cocktail party at Government House last evening. They will be formally welcomed by the Samoan people at the famour King’s kava ceremony today.
