CESSION OF SARAWAK CHALLENGED

(10.40 a.m.) SINGAPORE, July 14. The heir presumptive to the Rajah of Sarawak, Captain Bertram Brooke, and his son, Mr. Anthony Brooke, took legal action at Brunei today challenging the legality of the annexation of Sarawak by Britain.

The action takes the form of a civil suit against the ex-Raj ah, Sir Charles Vyner Brooke, end others. The plaintiffs claim that Sir Charles had no legal right to cede the territory, and its subsequent annexation by Britain, therefore, was illegal.

Sarawak, an independent sovereign State under British protection, was annexed and became a British Crown Colony on July 1, 1946,
