HUNGRY CHINESE LOOT RICE SHOPS

(11 a.m.) SHANGHAI, June 16. Large-scale rice riots broke out in two towns today, causing the authorities to dump a huge quantity of rice on the Shanghai market to force down prices. One person was killed and 10 injured when hungry mobs at Ningpo. about 100 miles south of Shanghai, raided over 200 rice shops in the city for over five hours.

The police, reinforced by troops, restored order and imposed a curfew throughout the area. The price of rice has doubled in Ningpo in the last fortnight. Similar disturbances are reported from Changchow, one of the principal rice-producuv centres on the ShanghaiNanking railway, 100 miles from Shanghai.
