“FLYING FORTS” MISSING OVER THE ATLANTIC

(10 a.m.) LONDON, June 16. The American flight control office in Frankfurt announced that it has received a routine message informing them of the disappearance of three Flying Fortresses over the Atlantic between the Azores and Europe. The spokesman said that no notification had been received that the aircraft belonged to the United States Army Air Force. He thought that they might have been sold as surplus to a foreign country. One of the aircraft radioed soon after leaving the Azores that it was on fire and was returning to the AzoresA report from Santa Maria, Azores, says that a search plane radioed that it had sighted unidentified - wreckage, which -is believed to be part of the aircraft in the area where the three Flying Fortress planes were reported missing. Warships are heading for the area.
