N.Z. SPENT OVER £16,000,000 ON LIQUOR IN 1947: NEW RECORD
(P.A.) _ WELLINGTON, June 15. New Zealand’s bill for liquor consumed reached a record high figure of £16,208,343, or £9/1/11 a head, in 1947, according to estimates compiled by the New Zealand Alliance.
The total consumption of beer in 1947 was 29,000,480 gallons or 16.272 gallons a head of the population. This was more than two and a half times the consumption in 1945 although slightly below that for 1946. The Alliance says that the extra expenditure for 1947 over the 1946 figures was due to excessive increases, in imported liquors. New Zealand wine production used to range between 100,000 and 200,000 gallons a year. Last
year it was 510,450 gallons, yet the imported quantity was 276,092 gallons, compared with 155,482 gallons in 1946. The consumption of beer, wine and spirits, a head of population, is quoted as follows (the figures expressed in gallons):—
1935 . Beer . 7.185 Wine 0.10G Spirits 0.313 1938 . . 10.787 0.124 0.304 1941 . 11.930 0.170 0.18ft 1944 .. 15.17 0.262 0.102 194S . 17.045 0.353 0.188 1947 . 16.272 0.441 0.264
