IRON SHORTAGE MAY CAUSE UNEMPLOYMENT
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, June 15. Because of the acute shortage of galvanised iron sheeting and in consequence of its inability to manufature spouting and down-piping _ one large sheet metal firm in the city is considering laying ofT some of its employees till the position improves. The manager of the firm said this morning that the position had never been worse, even during the leanest years of the war
He claimed that plenty of galvanised sheeting could be imported from the United States if dollar funds were made available. At present most of the stocks came from Australia or England, he added.
Other plumbers and sheet metal workers in Dunedin said the position was really desperate and unless it improved soon unemployment in the trade must be the result.
It was pointed out that some of the large motor firms in the north had recently found it necessary to dismiss manv members of their staffs because of the metal shortage, and the same must occur in Dunedin in the near future.
