N.Z. BUILDING NEEDS SHOULD BE REVIEWED
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 16. A record number of houses was built in New Zealand last year. If this rate of construction is maintained for another three or four years, the housing position should greatly improve. An expansion i n housing activities beyond the present point would be possible only if the output of building materials were increased and such an increase might involve uneconomic investment. The time has arrived for a review of the Dominion’s overall building requirements. These points were made by Sir James Fletcher, chairman of Fletcher Homings, Ltd., at the company’s annual meeting.
Other points were that lack of office space and of schools was as acute as that of houses, that to maintain development, a limited programme of construction other than housing was essential, and that the erection of one big office building in each of the four main centres would bring great relief to the commercial community, without making a serious call on labour or materials.
