HARRIERS PACK RUN
RIVERSIDE ROAD COURSE
The Riverside Road route provided Gisborne Y.M.C.A. harriers with the longest club pack run of the season during the week-end in the first Saturday run of the club for a period of four weeks.
The course traversed Riverside road including steep gradients for about three miles and a half as far as the cable car. Here the Waimata River was crossed and- the return to the Y.M.C.A. was made via “The Hole in the Wall,” de Latour road and Rutene road.
Attempts to ford the river were checked by its swollen condition, but two of the runners, McDonald and Smith, negotiated it by swimming. Traversing the slippery slopes in the vicinity of the river and silt-covered areas brought exciting phases. There was no organised run-in, both fast and slow packs keeping a steady pace. The usual standard was maintained and a notable performance was given by G. Wells a young newcomer, who set the pace for the fast pack over the concluding mile arid a half.
The Hewitt Shield, donated by Mr Fred Hewitt, former Napier harrier and now of Wellington, is to be contested cn July 10 when Hawke’s Bay runners are expected to visit Gisborne. A crosscountry course is to be arranged, seniors covering six miles and a quar ter and juniors half that distance.
