BEN HOGAN WINS U.S. OPEN GOLF TITLE

LOS ANGELES, June 13. Ben Hogan, 35-year-old Texas-born professional, won the United States open golf championship yesterday with the record-breaking score of 276 for 72 holes on the 7020-yard Riviera Country Club course, par for which is 284. Jimmy Demaret was second with only two strokes more, Jim Turnesa third, and Bobby Locke fourth. Hogan not only smashed by five strokes the record set by Ralph Guldahl in 1937, but also became the first golfer to take both the Professional Golf Association and United States open titles in the same year since Gene Sarazen did it in 1922.
