CLOTHES RATIONS MAY END SOON: FATE OF SUBSIDIES
(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter— Copyright.) (11 a.m.) CANBERRA, June 15. The end of clothes rationing is expected soon —possibly within a month or six weeks. The full Cabinet is discussing today a recommendation to this effect by a special sub-committee of the Cabinet set up to report on subsidies and rationing.
Sub-committees will also make these recommendations on the Commonwea.th price stabilisation subsidies: 1. The withdrawal of subsidies on potatoes, whole milk, textiles *uiu raw wool. 2. Retention of subsidies on primary production, including butter, cheese and coal.
The fate of the tea subsidy appears uncertain. Reliable reports indicate that the Government will favour the retention of the present amount paid as a subsidy, but will not increase it to offset any future rise in the imported cost of tea
Commonwealth subsidies for this financial year arc expected to exceed £40,000,000 which will make them £14,000,000 more than the Budget estimate.
