DRUNK WINS £6OOO WHILE IN PRISON

SYDNEY, June 14. Locked in a cell overnight for drunkenness, a 40-year-old man was informed by the police that he had won first prize of £6OOO in the State lottery. He was celebrating his birthday when the lottery was drawn and when arrested his wallet contained only four shillings and four lottery tickets. He refused a police offer to telephone his wife for bail money because it was his first time behind bars and he wished to avoid trouble. The decision was quickly reversed, however, when a detective examined the tickets and discovered the prisoner’s fortune. Sure of his reception, the lucky winner borrowed six shillings bail from a sympathetic policeman and started home.

“It’s been a quite a day,” he commented.
