SEE-SAW BATTLE IN CHINA: BIG GAINS

SHANGHAI, June 13. The Communists have regained the Initiative in South-west Shantung war zone in the last 24 hours. Sweeping southward along the Tient-sin-Pukow railway in an irresistable three-pronged advance, the Communists' columns this afternoon attacked the suburb of Yenchow and the city walls of Chufu, birthplace of Confucius, 10 miles to the east. Eighty-thousand encircled Communist troops today broke clear as a result of the advance. Life in Chengteh, capital of Jehol, is rapidly returning to normal. Government forces have retaken all strongholds within a radius of 30 miles of the formerly threatened city. Cangchun, the last Government stronghold in North Manchuria, yesterday experienced one of its worst bombardments for months. The Communists pumped in over 800 shells, causing considerable damage.
