REP. RUGBY PLAY

COUNTRY DAY SUB-UNION REPS. GISBORNE FIFTEENS Ground entrance passes of players and union officials are to be suspended at the Gisborne Oval on Saturday, Country Rugby Day, when the representative teams of the three Poverty Bay sub-unions meet fifteens selected from the Gisborne clubs. This decision to curtail the usual privileges was made at last evening's meeting of the union management committee when the chairman. Mr. M. H Beuth, emphasised that besides providing the opportunity for players and reserves of six teams to appear before the union selectors, the fixtures were part of the campaign for funds to defray the expenses of the visit of the P.B. team to the South Island in September. An exception was made in the case of players selected to take part in the three sub-union v. Gisborne games. To them the usual players’ passes will be available.

There were present at the meeting Messrs. M H. Beuth (chairman), C. Mills, E Felton, J. Smith, B. Dodge, R. Callaghan, R Huston, J. O'Neill, L. Lamont, and W. S. McKee (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. T. W. McGuffie, K. FJones and F. Baillie. Starting Time Amended To meet the convenience of the subunion players, many of whom would have to travel considerable distances, the time of commencement of the programme was delayed to 12.30 p.m. During the discussion it was stressed that in order to give full opportunity to the selectors and the general public, it was essential to play each of the three games on the same field. This is to be No. 1 ground. Allowing two spells, each of 35 minutes, for each game with intervals of five minutes between spells and between games, the programme approved provided for the conclusion of play by approximately 4.30 p.m. The list of games, each' on No. 1 ground, and referees appointed is: At 12.30 p.m.—Motu v. Gisborne (III) Mr. P. Buckingham. At 1.50 p.m.—Ngatapa v. Gisborne (II), Mr. H. Duckworth. At 3.10 p.m.—Waikohu v. Gisborne (I), Mr S. Ritchie. Grade competition games of Saturday were suspended with the exception of two outstanding from the junior first round. These are: Junior.—At 1.15: Celtic v. Y.M.P., Oval N. 2 ground; Old Boys v. Union, Oval No. 3. The appointment of Mr. P. Balfour as referee for the Town v. Country rep. trial game at Patutahi in the ensuing week-end was also approved. It was decided to request the Ngatapa sub-union in whose area the game would be played to administer it and arrange for a curtain-raiser as the subunion deemed advisable. The proceeds of this game, it was explained wbuld also be devoted to the southern tour fund. Teams Announced It was stated that, in the sub-union v.
