RENT BONUS RACKET IN NEW YORK
NEW YORK, May 12
The rent bonus racket, widely practised in New York, has been brought into the open with the arrest of a wealthy real estate operator, a woman real estate broker and two other men on charges of having fleeced tenants of nearly £6200 in the past 18 months. The first of these, who owns 12 large Manhattan residential buildings, in addition is accused of having demanded and received a one-legged ex-service-man’s priority for a new motor car before consenting to rent him an apartment. This was in 1946. when new cars were almost unprocurable-Twenty-seven charges against the accused allege that they extorted bonuses of up to £460 in cash before leasing apartments. <he woman broker allegedly applied the gouge twice to one tenant, getting £155 the first time and £3lO more when the tenant wanted a larger suite in the same building a few months later.
