COMPENSATION FOR SOLDIERS’ BLOCKS

EARLY HEARING ARRANGED

Members of the Gisborne Land Sales Committee will embark this week upon the hearing of compensation claims in respect of the Hihiroroa and Tnumata station blocks, which were compulsorily acquired two years ago by the Crown for settlement by discharged servicemen.

The hearing will r.ot be the first of its kind conducted by the committee, but it is likely tc be the most protracted by a good margin, with outside counsel appearing for the trustees in respect of c.ne block and the Lands Department head office directly represented also. It is forecast that four or five days may be needed to deal with the claims in 'the first instance, the parties later having recourse to the Land Sales Court in the event of the compensation fixed by the district committee providing any grounds for appeal. Hearing to Commence Wednesday

In the claim of the trustees for the Hihiroroa block against the Crown, Mr. H. P. Richmond, Auckland, with him Mr, L. C Parker. Gisborne, will appear for the claimants; while Mr. J. S. Wauchop, with him Mr. L. C. Parker, will appear for the trustees of the Taumata block The Lands Department will be represented in both cases by Mr. W. S. Kent, a solicitor from the department's head office. The hearing will commence on Wednesday.

Both Hihiroroa and Taumata—the latter renamed Hiwinui under the land settlement scheme —are at present occupied by the Crown, and are under development by staffs of returned servicemen who later will be allocated sections in the respective blocks.

STATUS OF DOCTOR ON HOSPITAL BOARD

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 24. The status of Dr. F. Russell Chisholm as a member of the Auckland Hospital Board will be referred to the board's leagl advisers following the recent Supreme Court judgment given by Mr. Justice Fair who upheld the disqualification of Dr. H. G Rix from acting as a member of the Wellington Hospital Board. “Although I have r.ot seen all the details of Dr. Rix's ease, it seems as if Dr. Chisholm is unfortunately in the same position,” said Mr. J. Grierson, chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board.
