TREMELLO WINS WINTER CUP BY A SHORT NECK

(.P.A.) PALMERSTON N.. June 14. Tile Manawalu Racing Club’s winter meeting opened on Saturday under perfect conditions and there was good racing and many close finishes. The course was slow early after a frost, but improved as tl'.e day progressed and the going was really good. There was a large attendance and the totalisaior turnover was £91,378 10s, compared with £91,703 on the first day last year. Several horses fell during the running of the first race and L. Wagner, ridei of Kelmont, suffered a cut hand, R. Hewitt, rider of Valued, broke a collarbone, and D. Collins, rider of Christopher Wren, injured his hip. An inquiry into the falling of Philanderer in the First Division of the Maiden Stakes resulted in the suspension of E. Mcvnell, rider of Lord Manna, for a month, it being held that lie had failed to have two clear lengths before crossing over.
