SHOPS AND GARDENS FLOODED BY DELUGE DURING DARKNESS
(S.R.) WAIROA, June 14. The Wairoa Borough last night experienced the heaviest downfall of rain for some time. Practically all drains were found incapable of coping with the downpour and the water soon backed up over the watertables on to footpaths and many gardens in the town represented miniature lakes, whilst areas set aside for growing vegetables are in the majority of cases under water.
On Marine Parade water from the congested drainage flowed in at the rear of a number of business places, causing slight damage to goods'and with no sign of improvement in the weather conditions shopkeepers probably will have a worrying time today. One advantage of today’s flooding probably will be that stronger support will now be found forthcoming for the sewerage-loan proposal, a poll for which is to be taken on June 30.
The rainfall registered in Wairoa between midnight and 9 a.m. today was 21 in., a very heavy fall for this district.
