TWO MEN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED THEFT OF FIVE FUR COATS

Two members of the crew of t-he s.s. Wainui were arrested in Dunemn yesterday on a charge of stealing five fur coats while the vessel was at Gisborne early this month. This advice was received by the police in Gisborne late yesterday afternoon.

While the Wainui was last at Gisborne a glass panel in an island window in the snop of Petties Limited, was broken in the early hours of one morning and five fur coats and a handbag, of a total value of £220, taken. It was suspected b v the police in Gisborne that someone from the crew of the was involved and two searches of the vessel were made by detectives. On the second . search the fur coats and the handbag were found pushed under some lumber in a store-room. No arrests were made in Gisborne before the vessel sailed for Dunedin. MEN APPEAR BEFORE COURT IN DUNEDIN (P.A.) DUNEDIN, June 12. Two seamen, James Dominick Davidson, aged 19, and David Sinclair Harcus, aged 21, appeared in the Police Court today charged with breaking and entering a shop in Gisborne and stealing five fur coats of a total value of £223 6s. The accused were remanded in custody until June 17.
