HAWKE’S BAY AND WAIRARAPA DRAW

(P.A.) NAPIER, June 8.

An opportunist dropped goal two minutes before the game ended gave Hawke’s Bay a draw, 8-all, with Wairarnpa in the annual King’s Birthday Rugby match. Four thousand spectators watched the match, which was full of thrills. It was played on a muddy field.

Despite the conditions, play was open and spectacular, especially among the Wairarapa backs, for whom the All Black. Couch, was a very bright star. A try by Matthews gave Wairarapa a 3-0 lead at half-time. Early in the second half Frazer crossed for Hawke’s Bay, Wishnowsky converting. Blake scored the visitors’ second try, Couch converting for Wairarapa to lead 8-5.

Just before time Churchward dropped a field goal which, under the new rule, enabled Hawke’s Bay to equalise but not win
