“FLY BRITISH” POLICY BEING DROPPED
LONDON, June 1. Britain Is to abandon its policy of flying “all British” aircraft on the air trunk routes, /vnerican Constellations, bought from Irish Air Lines, which has abandoned its projected Atlantic service. are to be used on the Australian route, and the Hythe flying-boats will be withdrawn, probably towards the end of this year. it is also expected that the Government will buy airliners from Canada, known ns Canadair 4. They are of American design, but are being built in Canada under license. They are powered by British Rolls Royce Merlin engines. The ‘Fly British” policy was followed to give Britain's aircraft industry a chance to recover from its wartime preoccupation with military production. It has not been successful, because the interim types of British aircraft proved uneconomic and have attracted few passengers on routes where other operators have been using more modern American airliners. It is thought unlikely that the “Fly British” policy will return before 1953, when the de Hnvilland Comet, the Bristol Brabazon, and the Saunders-Roe flying-boat are expected to be ready for service. All three types will be jetpropelled.
