THEFT OF TROUSERS
WAR ASSETS UNIFORMS TWO WATERSIDERS FINED (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, April 28. Fines of £lO were imposed on two watersiders, Joseph Botica, aged 39. a widower with three children, and Ira James Mallett, married, with one child, by Justices of the Peace in the Police Court today on charges of stealing one pair of battledress trousers, each valued at £l, the property of the Army Department. Both pleaded guilty. For the police it was stated that the accused were engaged in unloading the Gabriella at Greymouth. When approximately £B3 worth of goods consigned by the War Assets Board to a Greymouth firm was found to be missing, search warrants were obtained and one pair of trousers was found at each of the accused’s home. Another watersider, Alexander John Bromley, aged 21, single, was ramrod / until Monday on a charge of the th i. of £ll/15/- worth of goods from the same consignment.
