AUSTRALIAN NAVY’S CARRIERS ARRIVING NEXT YEAR

no a m ) CANBERRA, April 29. Australia’s two new aircraft-carriers will be named Sydney and Melbourne, said the Minister for the Navy, Mr. W. J. F. Eiordan, yesterday.

The carriers’ aircraft would be Sea Furies Mk. XI fighters and Fireflies Mk. IV triple-purpose planes for bombing, reconnaissance and antisubmarine operations. . The carriers would be of the Majestic class similar to the Theseus and Glory of the Colossus class and each would have a displacement of 14,000 tons.

Mr. Riordan said the Sydney would be commissioned in England in October and would leave for Australia early in the new year. Most of the officers and men would be members of the Royal Australian Navy. Mr. Riordan said the carriers would perpetuate the names of the Australian cruisers of the first and second world wars.
