AUTUMN FLOWERS
COLOURFUL DISPLAY CHRYSANTHEMUM BLOOMS One of the most colourful floral displays to be seen in Gisborne for some time was on view in the Bon Accord Lounge today, when the P.B. Horticultural Society staged a chrysanthemum display. Multi-coloured blooms filled the hall. Once a regular feature in the schedule of shows, chrysanthemum’s have not been displayed by the society for the past 10 years, interest having lapsed in them as a result of disease spreading through the plants in the district. It is expected that today’s display will revive district interest in the growing of these flowers. All varieties of chrysanthemums are represented in the display, from the large Japanese variety down to the small pop-poms, including anenome centred and many other varieties, several varieties which have not been displayed in Gisborne before are on the benches. Prominent local growers are represented on the benches, some of the best blooms having been grown by Mr. R. Stevens, while a small but first-class entry was grown by Mrs. R. P.Baigent. Messrs. C. O. Hansen and F. Birkett have staged a large variety of blooms. _ Three prominent growers from outside Gisborne are also well represented by blooms, the display put up by Messrs. J. Hollows and Sons, Palmerston North, being outstanding. Shailer's Nurseries, Palmerston North, and Mr. R. G. Wilson, Taradale, also exhibited a variety of blooms. Decorative work executed with chrysanthemums is also a prominent feature of the display.
