“GOD OR SATAN”
MENACE OF COMMUNISM (9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, April 28. No Government could succeed unless the people made up their minds to crush Communism, Dr. Mannix, Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, told 2000 trade unionists at a special Mass. He said that if he were speaking to the Federal and State Governments he would say that they should be more alive and alert to the menace of Communism. If he were speaking to employers, he would say that many times they had been responsible for the existence and strength of Communism. A large number of misguided people seemed to have no other idea but to seek more leisure and less work. Workers should, if possible, raise the standard of living in Australia, but should remember that there was a limit beyond which industry could not be forced. The recent elections in Italy had been a contest between God and Satan in which Satan, in the form of Communism, had recorded a temporary setback.
