CHINESE FINED £l6O
INCOME TAX EVASION (P.A.) GORE, April 21. Fines totalling £l6O were imposed on Willie Gee. Chinese fruiterer, Gore, by Mr. R. C. Abernethy, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on four charges of making false returns of income. Mr. J. R. Mills, for the commissioner of taxes, said the defendant’s income returns for the four years 1943-46 totalled £835, whereas the department assessed his income at £4391. The total evasion amounted to £561 income tax and £475 social security tax. All arrears had since been paid, including a 10 per cent, penalty. Mr. Wills said the defendant had not kept any books and the department had experienced great difficulty in assessing his income. Prior to this he had not filed any returns, although he had been in business since 1931. Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £4O on each charge.
