MURDER ALLEGATION
CHILD’S BODY DISCOVERED MAORI WOMAN IN COURT (P.A.) WANGANUI. April 21. In the Taihape Police Court yesterday a single woman. Agnes Hopi, a Maori aged 19 years, was charged with the murder of a female child thought to have been a day or so old. She was remanded to appear at Wanganui A coincidence led to the finding of the body of a female child in a suitcase among scrub on the side of a gorge just north of Taihape on Sunday night. Returning from a business trip to «he north in a car with a small trailer, a Turakina resident drove off the Highway at a sharp corner about 7.30 n.m. The vehicle fell some distance down a steep slope before being held bv scrub. The occupants were not hurt and scrambled up to the road and sought help. Constable Ingram and Mr. G. Woodcock. garage manager, arrived at the scene half an hour later and while inspecting the vehicle found a suitcase. They opened it and saw the legs of a child.
The police promptly commenced investigations which are in the hands of Detective-Sergeant May. Wanganui.
