NEWS OF THE DAY

Vote of Condolence Prior to the commencement of business at yesterday's meeting of the Waikohu County Council a vote of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr. A. W. J. Clayden, a well known member of the Te Karaka community. Petrol Now Available Some concern had been expressed recently by members of the Waikohu County- Council when they learned that the sub-district oil fuel controller at Gisborne had declined to allow their application for extra petrol, to enable them to attend council meetings. Their fears were relieved yesterday, however, when they learned that the matter would be reconsidered by the controller and it was resolved to make further application for extra petrol. European Wasp Infestation A Stanley road resident who yesterday went out to his wood-heap and found an unfamiliar insect perched upon the topmost log read with particular interest a short item in last night's Herald concerning the spread of the European wasp to this district. He found on his wood-pile a bronzecoloured insect plainly marked with black and gold bands on the back, and with a double prong at the tail enclos-j ing a long sting. He identified it from the Herald's description as a queen wasp, the body being about 2in. in length. It proved difficult to kill, and impressed the finder as a particularly. ..tough insect. --
