CHURCH UNITY VITAL

DR. BAILLIE’S APPEAL STRENGTH OF OPPONENTS (PA.) WELLINGTON, April 20. “For their very existence the churches of the world must unite in view of the growing consciousness of strength in their adversaries,’ .said the Very Rev. Dr. John Baillie, in a public address in St. John’s Presbyterian Church last night. The speaker, who is a Professor of Divinity at Edinburgh University and a former Moderator of the Church of Scotland, is one of the leaders of the movement for a world union of all churches. The forces operating against the church today, said Dr. Baillie, were much more conscious of their strength than they were 25 years ago. The church could not afford to be less united and vital than its opponents were for its health or future existence. At the Amsterdam conference of the World Council of Christian Churches this year, all non-Roman churches would be together. It was necessary however, that, in addition to all churches in every country having direct asociation with the World Council of Churches, all churches should have close lateral contact with eacn other in their own countries.
