JAPANESE ARMS HIDDEN UNDER WAR GOD SHRINE
(10 a.m.) TOKYO, April 15. Under a shrine dedicated to the god of war, British troops this week discovered sufficient Japanese arms and ammunition to equip a regiment. The haul, which was made by -joint security and counter-intelli-gence workers under Lieutenant R. Miller, of Normanby, Taranaki, included 600 rifles, 60,000 rounds of small arms ammunition, 21 heavy machine-guns, four anti-aircraft machine- guns, 11 cannon, 324 bayonets and 17 swords. The afms were found after several weeks’ search at Matsue on the northern coast of Japan in the 8.C.0.F. area. They had been covered with grease, put in tarpaulins and buried. Later the shrine was erected. The B.C O.F. authorities said the weapons were in first class condition and had been buried at the end of the war at the instigation of the commanding officer of the antiaircraft regiment. This was known to the Japanese, but had been carefully concealed from the occupation authorities.
