IRON SAND TESTS

N.Z. STEEL INDUSTRY? SPECIAL FURNACE BOUGHT (P.A.) WELLINGTON. April 14. The development of a large-scale iron and steel industry in New Zealand may be presaged by the securing of an electric smelting furnace and equipment to be used at Onckaka this year in tests on iron sands. “In view of the fact that the iron sand deposits on the west coast of the North Island are of considerable size, tile results of these tests will be awaited with keen interest,” said the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr. A. H Nordmeyer, this afternoon. “If in the light of modern scientific developments it can be demonstrated that iron and steel can be produced successfully and at an economic cost the effect on New Zealand economy will be considerable.”
