ROAD LICENSE FEES

REMIT FAVOURS REVIEW

LOCAL BODY ATTITUDE (P.A.) DUNEDIN, April 15. A suggestion made by Mr. E. Andrews, Mayor of Christchurch, that all license fees payable to local bodies should be reviewed “with a view to having them fixed at a level commensurate with the fall in the value of money since the fees were originally fixed,” was adopted by the conference of the Municipal Association. Mr. Andrews said the fees were inadequate to meet today’s administrative costs. He suggested that an increase in drivers’ license fees was justified, r:s local bodies did not control traffic efficiently on the amount received from the license fees. Mr. W. P. Hartstonge, Mayor of Mosgiel, suggested that the association should step warily, as both the Government itself charged fees for many ihenses avid it migi; follow suit and increase i’s fees, th is putting the public into a worse position. He would not like to put this idea into Mr. Nash’s head. The remit was carried.
