NEW CHAIRMAN

MR. A. M. ROBERTSON AID-FOR-BRITAIN DRIVE To replace Dr. A. L, Singer, who was recently forced by pressure of other business to resign his position as chairman of the executive council of the Gifborne District Aid-for-Britain Committee, Mr. A. M. Robertson was appointed chairman at last night's meeting of the committee. The nomination of Mr Robertson was proposed by the chairman, the Mayor, Mr. N. IT. Bull, and seconded by Mr. A. O. Martin. His nomination was unopposed. Mr. Bull mentioned that Mr. Robertson as a retired civil servant had the necessary time and the energy for the job.

There were present at the meeting the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, chairman, Mrs. K. Tucker and Messrs. A. M. Robertson, D. Moran, G. C. Jones, A. O. Martin, S. McGuinncss and T. Martin. Five applications were received for the position of secretary-organiser to the district committee at n salary of £4OO per year. An interviewing committee consisting of Mrs. Tucker and Messrs. A. M. Robertson, D. Moran, J. I.,cggat and S. McGuinness was appointed. The committee will interview applicants and report back to the committee.

Some discussion ensued on the appointment of the secretary-organiser, Mr. A. O. Martin pointing out that from inquiries he had made, the job was a full-time one. Mr. Jones suggested that a trial of six months should be given the secretary. The committee was in its infancy and six months should give it ample time to prove whether or not the committee and the secretary-organ-iser were doing a worth-while job. It was moved by Mr. Jones, and seconded by Mrs. Tucker, that it be a direction to the interviewing committee that the appointment be made for six months at the discretion of the committee and subject to review. Mr. Robertson was instructed to inquire from outside centres and headquarters in Wellington whether or not the position of secretary-organiser was la full-time one.
