“WILD EXAGGERATION”
REVOLT ON MANUS IS.
STATEMENT BY MINISTER
SYDNEY, March 22. Although he described the Daily Telegraph's report of an armed Chinese uprising on Manus Island as “wildly exaggerated,” the Minister of External Territories, Mr E. J. Ward, admitted that certain Chinese had claimed extraterritorial rights. He said complaints had been received that 300 Chinese who were packing surplus United States war stores for China were committing offences against the natives.
The Chinese were evasive when the offenders were sought and claimed extraterritorial rightsA police superintendent, two white officers and a squad of native polica have been sent to Manus.
The Minister said that apparently the Chinese officer m charge of the Chinese has contested the right of the Australian authorities to apprehend any of bis men on charges of offences against natives. “We maintain that while they are in Australian territory they are subject to Australian law,” the Minister concluded.
