BREAK-UP IN SIGHT

EMPIRE STERLING AREA

LONDON PAPER’S FORECAST (10 a.m.) LONDON, March 22. "The end of the British Empire” is forecast by the Daily Express if a plan—said to be under consideration m Washington by the Siate Department—for America to take over Britain s economic responsibilities in Australia, New Zealand, India and Egypt goes through. The Daily Express referred to the New York Times’ statement that, in return for Marshall Plan aid, pressure will be brought to bear on Britain to give up being the banker for the Empire and other sterling area countries. The newspaper declared that the Prime Minister, Mr. C. A- Attlee, and some of his colleagues, by their lack of faith and judgment, had so ' sorely damaged the sterling area that South Africa was moving in the direction of a separate monetary system. “And that will be the beginning of the utter disintegration of the sterling area for the whole lot of us,” added the paper.
